VET – Vocational Education and Training

Maximising the learning opportunities, career pathways and educational outcomes for students.

Vocational education and training (VET) enables students to acquire skills and knowledge for work through a nationally recognised, industry-developed training package or accredited course. VET is delivered, assessed, and certified by registered training organisations (RTOs).

VET is an excellent choice of study for many students once they have completed relevant industry work experience and collected evidence of their genuine interest. It always includes practical, hands-on learning and it can lead to jobs in many fields. Studying VET as part of the SACE gives a student a headstart on a qualification, which is a great way to fast-track progress towards a rewarding career while also developing independence and time-management skills.

Undertaking VET may benefit students’ exploration of a variety of career pathways; it is not just reserved for a pathway within the trades (e.g. plumbing, automotive, electrotechnology, engineering and construction). OVC is part of the Western Adelaide Senior Secondary Network (WASSN) group of schools that provide access to a range of vocational courses across the Western area. Students can complete VET qualifications in a diverse range of industries, including business administration, veterinary nursing, individual support, aged and disability care, allied health or maritime operations.

At Ocean View College, students can register for a Certificate II in Construction Pathways with a particular focus on steel frame fabrication, undertaken from the VET shed near the gym at the College one day per week in Year 11. The certification through ATEC can provide a career start as an apprentice working in the building and construction industry for companies such as ASC, BAE, Maxispan or Bluescope.

Why choose a VET pathway?

  • Our VET programs are accredited as part of the SACE;
  • Our VET programs link students with flexible learning programs where needed;
  • Our VET programs support students through the ‘VETRO’ counselling and application process;
  • They also teach core skills for learning and work (literacy, numeracy and employability skills).
